Enhance Scanned Photos

posted on

Get the best of both worlds - scan multiple photos and photo enhancement.  ScanSpeeder works with your scanner to offer photo restoration and ScanSpeeder's efficiency in scanning multiple photos, digitally tagging them, and splitting them into separate files.

Photo Enhancement for Scanned Photos

Step 1 - Select TWAIN advanced scan method

In the upper right-hand corner of ScanSpeeder click 'File', 'Select Scan Method', and chose 'TWAIN (advanced method)'.

  • Please note: a pop-up box will appear confirming that you have switched to TWAIN (advanced method).
  • If you want to switch back to the simple scan method, go to 'File', 'Select Scan Method', and choose 'WIA (simple method)'.
  • The WIA (simple method) scans faster than the TWAIN (advanced scan method).  If you do not need to enhance and restore photos, use WIA (simple method).

Step 2 - Set Scan and Enhancement Options

  • Every manufacturer offers different photo enhancing and restoration features.  Features range from scanner to scanner.
  • Please note that the available enhancement features may vary with your scanner model and may not be as pictured in this article.
  • We do not recommend you scan above 1200 dpi and 24 bit colour.  Optimal levels: 300 dpi best speed / 600 dpi best quality and 24 bit colour.
  • Every manufacturer has a different range of enhancements and restoration options available.
  • I have found that the more enhancement options I select, the slower the scan.  So, once you play around a bit with enhancement tools, use the ones that give the optimal levels and do not use the ones that give little effect.
  • For Epson scanners, I have outlined how to use the Epson Easy Photo Fix technology in this article.
  • For Canon scanners, I have outlined how to use the Canon ScanGear in this article
  • For HP scanners, I have outlined how to use the HP photo enhancement in this article

Step 3 - Scan Photos

ScanSpeeder will scan all the photos and will present you the restored and enhanced photos in the ScanSpeeder software, as shown below.

Step 4 - Automatically Split and Save Restored Photos

In ScanSpeeder's Step 2: Extract Photos, click the 'Extract Photos' button.

Step 5 - Save Photos

In ScanSpeeder's Step 3: Save Files, save your photos.

  • I recommend you save your photos in JEPG and TIFF format.  JPEG is a compressed format that is great for posting on social media or emailing.  TIFF is a "lossless" format meaning it is excellent for archiving photos.  For more great tips on scanning photos, see the Top 10 Photo Scanning Tips
  • This is a great time to think about how you will catalog your photos.  With ScanSpeeder's caption feature, you can catalog photos at the same time.  See this article to see how.

  • Hi Sandra, Thanks for sharing the post. However, I am a bit lost to use a "combined" scanning/photo-editing software. Can you comment on which would be better - using separate scanning and a photo-editor like PhotoViewerPro or a combined one?

    • @Kevin Brown: Hi Kevin, ScanSpeeder focuses on scanning multiple photos at once. This allows the user to put as many photos as they can fit, or their photo album page directly, on their flatbed and ScanSpeeder does the rest. It splits the photos into separate files. The user can then tag the photos as they scan them. The major manufacturers supply a free photo editing tool such as Epson, etc. ScanSpeeder works with the manufacturer tool thereby ScanSpeeder gives the ease of scanning multiple photos at once and the editing can be done on the spot with the use of the manufacturer software. That said, some people may want to add some editing after the fact. I like Photo Shop personally but do know its learning curve is high. I briefly checked out Photo Viewer Pro after receiving your comment. It looks interesting! When I have more time I will look at further. It could be a great tool for later editing for the more advanced user. I'm wondering about its learning curve though. So to answer your question, ScanSpeeder focuses on scanning multiple photos and eases the massive project many people embark on when scanning their family printed photos. There are many great tools to use after the fact. We offer use of the manufacturer editing tools, right on the spot, as many people are happy to have the “one stop shop”. Regards, Sandra Dorosz

  • Hi, I am looking for the best released photo scanning/repairing software available as of 2016. Scan Speeder seems very simple to use, but I am not simple, and it does not appear to deliver full functionality of repairing photos ie: dust/scratches/rips etc. I suffered from a fire and now my parents are old. I have no photos so I intend to scan everything I can before they pass, some of which I know are going to be damaged in some way or another. I would like speed, ease of use (I have repaired several pictures with simple paint, but it takes endless hours and I am a software technologist, so I am quite privy to all the bells and whistles software can do)"Any suggestions?

    • @Tami: Hello Tami, thanks for your comment. I'm sorry to hear about the fire. ScanSpeeder is capable of basic touch-up of your scanned photos using your scanner's TWAIN driver. Depending on your scanner, ScanSpeeder may also be able to do basic dust and scratch removal from photos. If you need to do more advanced photo enhancement for things like rips and large scratches, etc.., you'll probably need something more along the lines of Photoshop. Happy New Year!
