Photo Enhancement with Epson Scanners

posted on

Scan multiple photos and restore them - all at once.  With ScanSpeeder's TWAIN advanced scan method, you get the best of both worlds - scan multiple photos and photo enhancement.  Epson scanners have Epson Scan (TWAIN compatible) with Epson Easy Photo Fix technology.  Epson scanners work with ScanSpeeder together offering Epson's photo restoration and ScanSpeeder's efficiency in scanning multiple photos, digitally tagging them, and splitting them into separate files.

Please note that the available enhancement features may vary with your scanner model and may not be as pictured in this article.

Photo Restoration with an Epson Scanner

Step 1 - Select TWAIN advanced scan method

In ScanSpeeder's upper-right corner click on 'File'.  Then select 'Select Scan Method', and choose 'TWAIN (advanced method)'.

You are now going to use ScanSpeeder and your scanner's software together.  With Epson's Easy Photo Fix technology you will see the screen below when you click SCAN in ScanSpeeder.

Step 2 - Select your Scan Settings and Photo Restoration Settings

1 - In the Epson Scan Screen above, select 'Professional Mode' and  change the Resolution to 600 dpi so you scan your photos in an archival quality.

  • Ensure the following options are selected: reflective, document table, photo, 24 bit colour, and 600 dpi.

2 - Then select the adjustments that you would like to make on your scanned photos.  In this case, my Epson scanner offers to: unsharp mask, descreen, color restoration, backlight correction, and dust removal.  If I click on the + sign next to each title, I can select more fine-tuned options.  For ease of use, I select all the options.

  • Please note: I have noticed the more options for photo enhancement that I select, the slower the scan.  So if you are wanting to rush through your photo scanning this may not be the option you want to use.  If you want to stop using photo restoration (which will dramatically speed up your scan time) then go to 'File', select 'Select Scan Method', and choose 'WIA (simple method)'; the simple method stops using the Epson software and walks you through scanning multiple photos without photo restoration.

3 - Click the 'Preview' button in the Epson Scan.

  • You can skip this step and press 'Scan' immediately; however, until you are familiar with the effects that each option provides, I would recommend that you preview first.  Manually make changes as they suit each scan.
  • Select and deselect photo enhancement and restoration options to see how the photo looks before and after the change.  Do this by clicking on the box in front of the option.  There is no need to press the Preview button again; in fact, it is much quicker to not press the preview again because clicking and unclicking the boxes will immediately show you the effects.

Step 3 - Scan Photos

Click the 'Scan' button in the Epson Scan screen.  ScanSpeeder will scan all the photos and will present you the restored and enhanced photos in the ScanSpeeder software.

Step 4 - Automatically Split and Save Restored Photos

In ScanSpeeder's Step 2: Extract Photos, click the 'Extract Photos' button.

Step 5 - Save Photos

In ScanSpeeder's Step 3: Save Files, save your photos.

  • I recommend you save your photos in JEPG and TIFF format.  JPEG is a compressed format that is great for posting on social media or emailing.  TIFF is a "lossless" format meaning it is excellent for archiving photos.  For more great tips on scanning photos, see the Top 10 Photo Scanning Tips
  • This is a great time to think about how you will catalog your photos.  With ScanSpeeder's caption feature, you can catalog photos at the same time.  See this article to see how.

  • Thanks for your article. I just bought an Epson Perfection V600 scanner and hope to scan about 15 years of photos, slides, and negatives. I have a Mac (an older one), so can you use the scanspeeder with my Mac? In particular, I want to be able to scan multiple photos at once but have them separated to work on them and store them. Thanks, Diane

    • @Diane: Hello Diane. Unfortunately ScanSpeeder does not work with Mac. It is Windows only.
